Wot I dun dis year
Looking through my midwifery practice record book to see what exactly I've done this year. Apart from make a gazillion beds and run to the lab and ferry wee around and point people in the right direction for the ultrasound room and all the thousand little jobs that make me super busy we have:
Competent at vital signs and urinalysis (wee!).
Administering drugs by mouth, vagina and rectum. Administering drugs intramuscularly.
Prepare for IV therapy (mostly related to the stuff wot isn't pain relief to make uterus contract because you don't know when to push anymore given to women having epidurals, I can set up for epidural in my sleep and have regularly dreamed about doing same), regulate IV infusions, use IV pumps and syringe drivers.
Provide urinary catheter care (wee!) and remove catheters (wee!)
Obtain midstream urine sample and 24 hour urine collection (even more wee! What, will these hands ne'er be clean?)
Do antenatal examinations including palpation and ausciltation of foetal heart using both Pinard stethoscope and doppler.
Take antenatal history (in ER.)
Use and interpretation of cardiotocograph.
Baby bathing including bathing demonstration for parents.
Daily and detailed examinations of newborn.
Positioning baby in cot to prevent SIDS.
Provide and demonstrate umbilical cord care.
Supporting a mother to breast feed/formula feed. (Breast is best! Go boobies!)
Dress sterile wounds.
Remove sutures and clips.
Daily examinations of postnatal women.
Providing post-operative care. (C-section, mostly.)
Provide care in high-risk pregnancy/labour/post-natal.
Still haven't caught a single baby though. *sulk* I need to catch 40 to get registered.
