I'm just in from the opening night of a photographic exhibition in the Droichead Arts Centre in Drogheda.

Many moons ago as a fresh faced and idealistic 17 year old, I decided it'd be fun to be a film nerd and started (and wandered my way in around through and eventually out of) what was DITs then "Advanced Diploma in Communications (Film and Broadcasting)" I swear, that's what it was called. It's now called Media Arts, which is about as wanky a title as a course can have. One of the first things we were told was "Buy a camera. A bog standard entry completely manual SLR. Just get one, we'll tell you what to do with it." They did. I still have the camera I bought then. I still use it. It's older than me but it works just fine and makes the most satisfying mirror swing noise ever. I like to think it's the camera that taught me a lot about photography, that taught me to see the way I know I do now. But meh, really no. I've been incredibly lucky to have some wonderful lecturers and tutors in my various lives. And I'm not the only one.

The exhibition tonight was the work of one of my former classmates, Liam Murphy. His use of colour, of line, of shadow is just superb. The texture of the work is... it calls out to you, it makes you want to touch them because there's no way that can be a photograph. I was genuinely impressed. If you're in Drogheda anytime soon, do pop in. Hey, it's a possibility! A remote one, I'll concede.

Look around you, the same stuff's there every day. Just take that photo. Keep a camera on you. Use it. Show off what you do. Get them printed so you can touch them. So others can see and touch and feel. Because there are three different sensations there.

See.

Touch.

Feel.
