I hate Citizen Kane. Hate. I have, at this hour, decided that there wasn't enough Marxist analysis in there. And just for good measure I chucked in some Lacan and de Saussure. And Adorno and Horckheimer, because no movie essay is complete without at least a passing reference to the Frankfurt School. HELP!

In fact, I don't think I've written about anything that actually happens in the film at all.

Oh, no, tell a lie, I used the word "rosebud." (And honestly, if that's a spoiler, never talk to me again.)

EDIT: Got rid of the Lacan. That was just going a little overboard. Just a leeetle. Have now mentioned things that ackshully happened! And I swear, this is the last re-write. This bears no resemblance to the first draft. First draft was about Stagecoach, for starters.

Luck, I has it. Wandered into the TCD drama department office at 1529 to hand over essay, apparently the office shuts to students at 1530. And as I was coming out, in walked the lecturer to collect the repeat essays. That's... cutting it fine, even for me. I stupidly assumed that anytime before 5 would be grand, it's always grand to saunter into the midwifery department office and have a chat with the XO who is not only wonderful and friendly but knows my name.

On the way home in my 3 hour bus journey (crash at Blake's Cross, I'm really hoping it wasn't just me who was lucky today) I started to read O'Driscoll's Active Management of Labour, finally. I had to ring people to calm me down. I knew it would do this to me, which is why I waited until now to read it.

Dude, where's your evidence? Why exactly do you think that rupturing the membranes of every woman who presents in labour at term is a good idea? And synt for all nulliparous women who "aren't progressing" (uh, define that for me there laddy) three hours after admission? You do get some credit though for using the term nulliparous (never given birth) rather than primiparous (first birth, past tense) or worse - primagravida (first pregnancy)! And routine vaginal examinations? EVIDENCE! You need it. If it wasn't a library book I'd have burned it by now.

If anyone wants to know why I will never, ever work in the NMH, that would be a good place to start. Just make sure that's not all you read about birth, though. I will not work under the shadow of O'Driscoll, not even to try and change it from within. I'm far more useful as a midwife than a medwife, or worse, an obstetric nurse. I don't know any of the trainee midwives in UCD/NMH. Must hunt some down, see what they're being taught.

Oh, and welcome to the world little Maya! My middle sister's boyf's niece. First babby, 5 hour labour, mum doing well, Maya has usual number of everything and just nudged 4kg.
