What it costs to train me up:
4 years of fees @ €6,500 pa
36 weeks of rostered internship @ €28,450 pa
Then there's the cost to me: lost earnings + loans = very conservative guess of €120,000
The cost to my family of having me living with them is included under loans.

And now, right before I qualify, our glorious leaders want me to take 12 days unpaid leave next year. When my professional body requires me to have completed a certain number of days in the clinical areas before I can get registered with them? That's one huge waste of money, then.

Yes, yes, I appreciate that things will be put in place to make sure that I, along with the thousand or so midwives and nurses countrywide currently in 4th year will be able to complete our studies. But really, combined with the difficulty in getting a job (we're still officially under a hiring embargo, after all) and other countries advertising that yes, actually, we'd love some recently trained midwives and nurses, is it really a good thing to piss us off even more? Cos let's face it, chances are I'll be working those 12 days for no pay just to get the Bord Altranais requirements. Comments about how I should be used to that at this stage will be met with thwappings with a flip-flop.

This is my home. It's where my family and heart are. And I do have a social conscience. But I won't stay where I'm not respected.

I am livid.
