Oct. 19th, 2008 01:40 amI'm an idiot, today is Sunday (now) not Saturday. Buggrit, how did my brain lose a day?
Am still pondering the implications of the budget, particularly regarding the parking space levy. Can a supernumerary employee (for want of a better word there) be charged? Hmm? Mind you, it's not like work can take it out of my wages. Particularly unimpressed with this "ha ha ha, you don't earn enough to be caught in the tax net? Well, that's why it's a 1% levy, not an increase in income tax!" nonsense. And while in theory I'm in favour of a means tested medical card for the over 70s, my idea of means is significantly different to even the new limits. Also, way to go originally setting the limit lower than the state pension...
Have worked out that I'll be nearly two grand worse off because of this budget, between registration fees for third level increasing by nearly 50% and the tax levy (ok, so the institutions are allowed increase the fees to €1500, wanna guess how many won't?) I may wait a while before submitting my request for a parking space at work as well. Even if I get one, I still pay to use it each time. I'll try not to kill babies out of being overtired because using public transport to get to work means I lose 4 hours a day of sleep. Two grand. Gosh. That's more than my commuting costs for the whole academic year, and that's where most of my money goes. That's more than I spend on smokes and shoes and booze and a social life and holidays and clothes and everybloodything else for the whole year, combined. Interesting times ahead.
I really, really need to camp outside someone's office until they see sense and let me have a room in the "nurses home." Current thinking is that because we're not paid they can't take the rent out of our wages. The idea that I might, I dunno, pay the rent to them somehow is one I'm still trying to beat into the head of the person in charge. There are available rooms at the minute, my stress levels are approaching where they were in April and that was not a happy time. A non-stressed Sarah is a productive Sarah. A Sarah who has slept is even more useful.
In happier news, I managed to get another 6 textbooks from these wonderful people. Saving ex-library books from wherever it is college ex-library books go? Yes please! Contributing money to literacy programmes? Way hey! Letting me buy lots of books for less than the price of one of them in the shops in Dubberlin? Bliss. So far have bought 10 books from those lovely people, have spent less than $80, including postage. Mmmm... books.
