EDIT: This was written on the basis of the press release from the HSE. I can only assume that whoever wrote the press release didn't actually read the report, as the actual report is making my blood boil far less than the press release. Actually, I'm not displeased with the report. So there ya go.
KPMG report on maternity and gynaecology services in the Dublin area is out today. I may be some time reading and contemplating.
I've been looking forward to reading this for some time. And what I've read so far is a load of round objects.
From the summary on hse.ie
- Services currently delivered at the Rotunda Hospital be moved to the Mater site.
- Services at the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital be moved to the Adelaide Meath & National Childrens Hospital (AMNCH), Tallaght.
- Services at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles St, be moved to St Vincent’s University Hospital.
There is no need for normal, healthy women with normal healthy pregnancies to be anywhere near an acute medical setting. This is a step towards further medicalisation of childbirth. And I do not like it. Unless the new services are going to be similar to the midwife led units in OLOL and Cyavan. Ha, right. (Ok, they're mentioned, but I can't see that becoming in the norm when mat. services are moved to acute settings.
"It is particularly obvious that there is significant potential for midwives to play a more prominent role in obstetrics."
Uhh... no. No there is not. Midwives != obstetric care. Sorry, that's why we have obstetricians. Midwives = midwifery care. The clue is in the name. Morons. Oh, and don't get me started on what they're saying about home birth.
"Choice within context of safety" now there's some concealed shroud waving if ever I saw some.
Quite happy the country probably doesn't have the money to implement this for a while.
I can feel my blood pressure going up already. And this is just from the summary. Beta blockers, anyone? Anyone?
Right, I'm off to read the main thing. At 245 pages I might be some time. But when the summary is affecting me this badly, it doesn't bode well.
