squeefulfishK. Rotunda is understaffed to the tune of 114.25 (WTE) midwives. The worst of the Big Three. Feckin' told ye I was overworked! Yes, that's one hundred and fourteen.
Have found two factual errors so far - Rotunda has three theatres, not two. Rotunda has never offered home birth, unlike the NMH.
Recommendation of 1 delivery room per 500 births/year. This would mean doubling the number of delivery rooms in each of the Big Three. (Coombe, NMH, Rotunda)
WHO has some funny figures about midwives in Ireland, putting it at 4.mumble per thousand population. Reckon that might be because ABA don't hold records of practising midwives, only those registered as midwives. Until last year public health nurses had to be registered midwives, so they're included in that number even though they wouldn't be providing maternity care (apart from one or two postnatal visits.)
Active management of labour is bad, mmkay. At least they're agreeing with me on that.
Our average length of stay in hospitals is stupidly long because we've no community midwifery (or next to none, anyway.)
Pleased with recommendations that promote continuity of care for women, with proper backup for carers, specialist support for excluded women (psych, drug abuse, non-English speaking, etc.) and a 24 hour support line for women similar to NHS Direct.
MLUs! Yes, I needed to shout about that. Recommendation for midwife led units (similar to OLOL and Cyavan) to be established next to the soon to be co-/tri-located mat./general/paed. hosps.
Just about halfway through now. This is taking longer than expected. I think I've had enough for tonight though, seeing as I'm off to the library in the morning and then marching rar.
I'd apologise about going on about this, but no, it's important to me as it will likely shape the way maternity services are delivered in the future and thus have a direct impact on my life.
