It was totally overshadowed by the student protest, but it was planned for today so today about 150 people protested outside the Dáil about the Nurses and Midwives Bill and the consequences it will have for home birth in Ireland if passed. Myself and three classmates mosied along, doing what little we could to protect what we believe in. Three of our lecturers, babies born at home, women from all over the country, midwives and students alike lent their voices. In the rain. And the cold. And the rain.

I lost count of the number of times my hair got attached to the spiky metal bits of brollies or the number of times said spiky bits threatened to remove an eye. When I protested that I'm rather fond of having depth perception, Gwyn pointed out that "you said you had two eyes, stop complaining!"

The petition was handed in around 1300 at which stage we were too soggy to join the students, but they had plenty in their numbers already (and at that stage things were starting to get a little bit interesting on the other side of those big grey buildings.) So we wandered off for tea and scones and buns and chatting. And that'll do.
