"If you don't know the normal, you'll never know the abnormal."
One of my tutors said this regularly when quizzing us on our unexpected outcomes of pregnancy and childbirth module. It's working well as a study tool, that sentence. I know the normal, know it back to front, inside out, upside down, swinging off chandeliers. So I should be able to work from the normal to the abnormal, and I gotta say, mostly, I can.
I can work on the differential diagnosis based on the symptoms but the problem is I need an actual person to look at and talk to and listen to about their symptoms, not write about imaginary women or imaginary babies. Not so great with the hypothetical, me. This is why I hate with a fiery passion my OSCE exams, the cord prolapse repeat where I kept saying "ok, I'm gonna listen to the foetal heart, what do you want it to be?" to the examiner because each finding affects how I proceed, each thing I hear or see. I'm good with my women, damn good, I know I am cos they tell me. I've made a difference. I'm not good with imaginary people though.
Let's see how I get on tomorrow. 50%, that's all I'm looking for. Good luck thoughts round half nine would be welcome :)
